Eating less but not losing weight after 40? Here's why
Oct 24, 2026
Why eating less isn't always the answer to losing weight after 40.
You're eating less. You've swapped your regular yoghurt for the low-fat version. You're having a tiny breakfast, a salad for lunch and trying your hardest to stay away from the biscuit tin.
You're doing everything you've been told to do.
So why are you still hungry, exhausted and struggling to lose weight?
Here's something I see all the time in my nutrition practice.
Women who genuinely believe they're eating well, but when we sit down and look at what they're actually eating, there's one big problem.
They're not eating enough of the foods that get the scales moving.
And that can make getting into shape a whole lot harder than it needs to be.
1. You've been taught to eat less, not eat better
For years, the diet industry has told us to cut back. Smaller portions. Low-fat everything. Have a shake for lunch.
And when the weight doesn't budge? Apparently, we're supposed to eat even less.
No wonder so many people are frustrated!
The problem is that a small meal isn't necessarily a satisfying meal. If you're not getting enough protein, fibre and healthy fats, you can find yourself hungry again an hour later.
Then comes the second coffee, the handful of nuts, a few crackers and something sweet to get you through the afternoon.
You started the day trying to eat less, but you've spent the whole day looking for something to eat.
Sound familiar?
2. That healthy breakfast might be setting you up for a hungry day
Let's talk breakfast.
A bowl of cereal with low-fat milk. A slice of toast with an egg. A fruit smoothie. A little tub of yoghurt.
All perfectly normal breakfasts. Some can be nutritious, too.
But depending on what you put in them, they can be surprisingly low in protein and fat, leaving you hungry long before lunchtime.
And if your breakfast is mostly carbohydrates, that can be a big contributing factor to belly weight.
That's why breakfast is one of the first things I look at with my clients.
I want you to eat something substantial. Something that actually keeps you satisfied.
The goal? Eat breakfast, get on with your morning and look up to realise it's lunchtime.
No biscuit hunt at 10am. No rummaging through the pantry. No constant thinking about food.
Imagine how much easier your day would feel!
3. Your body needs more than a smaller plate
As we get older, looking after our muscle becomes incredibly important.
Muscle helps us stay strong, active and independent. It also plays an important role in how our bodies use sugar.
And one of the best things we can do to support it is eat enough protein and keep moving, particularly through strength training.
Yet I regularly see women having a piece of toast and egg for breakfast, a tiny salad for lunch and wondering why they're tired, hungry and struggling to see changes.
Sometimes the answer isn't another smaller meal. It's a better-balanced one.
Real food. Proper meals. Food that leaves you feeling satisfied.
It's about giving your body what it needs while making healthy eating and a toned body easier to maintain.
This is exactly why I created FUEL YOUR FIRE!
4. Stop making healthy eating so complicated
This might be the biggest problem of all.
One week you're cutting carbs. The next you're counting calories. Then you're fasting, skipping meals or trying something you saw on Instagram.
And before long, you're completely confused about what you're supposed to eat.
I see it all the time.
People don't necessarily need more information. They've already got enough nutrition advice to fill a library!
What they need is a simple plan they can follow without thinking about food all day.
That's why I teach my clients something I call the Carefree Three.
Protein. Fibre. Healthy fats.
Build your meals around these three things.
No complicated rules. No starting from scratch every Monday.
Just simple habits you can repeat.
Because the magic isn't in doing something extreme for two weeks.
It's in doing the simple things consistently enough to see results.
5. You don't need another diet. You need the answers.
Here's what I want you to take away from this.
If you're over 40 and frustrated with your body, please don't automatically assume you need to eat less, exercise harder or find another diet.
Take a proper look at what you're eating.
Are your meals satisfying? Are you getting enough protein? Are you constantly snacking because your meals aren't keeping you full? Do you actually have a plan, or are you making it up as you go?
Sometimes a few practical changes can make an enormous difference.
And that's exactly what I love showing my clients.
Because once you understand what works for your body, healthy eating doesn't have to feel like a full-time job.
You can eat delicious food, enjoy your life and work towards a body that feels strong, healthy and confident, all the time.
And isn't that what we're all after?
You've tried figuring it out yourself. Now let me show you.
I didn't create Fuel Your Fire to give you another diet.
I created it to give you the answers and a simple, step-by-step plan you can actually follow.
Inside, I'll show you how to build satisfying meals, get your kitchen organised, create better habits and stop making healthy eating so complicated.
You'll get my video lessons, printable guides, shopping lists, heaps of family recipes (no cooking separate meals) and a clear four-week blueprint to help you fit back into the clothes at the back of your cupboard.
I did the figuring out. You just follow the plan.
No calorie counting. No obsessive tracking. No complicated dieting.
Just real food, simple habits and a plan designed to fit your life.
