I’ve found one tiny habit that I do every single morning — before breakfast — that truly sets my whole day up to feel lighter, brighter, and more energised.

It’s simple, fast, and doesn’t require any fancy ingredients or equipment: a glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice squeezed in.

 

Why lemon water?

After a good night’s sleep, your body naturally wakes up a bit dehydrated. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, your cells and organs have been working hard overnight, and they need hydration to function well. Starting your day with lemon water helps gently replenish that lost hydration right away.

But it’s not just about water. Lemon adds more benefits than you might think.

The vitamin C and antioxidants in lemon juice help...

Support your immune system 

Reduce inflammation

Aid digestion by stimulating your liver to produce bile — which helps break down fats and keeps your digestion running smoothly.

And because it’s a natural, gentle boost, lemon water wakes you up without the caffeine jitters or energy crash later on. I love how refreshing it feels, especially first thing in the morning when everything else feels slow and quiet.

 

How to make your morning lemon water

All you need is:

  • 1 glass of warm water (I boil the kettle and add about 1/4 cup and then fill the rest of the glass with room temperature water).  

  • Juice of half a fresh lemon (or about 1 -2 tablespoon of lemon juice)

Simply pour the water into your glass, squeeze in the lemon juice, give it a good stir, and sip slowly. If you want, you can add a pinch of sea salt for a little extra mineral boost, but that’s optional.

It literally takes less than 30 seconds to make — no fuss, no complicated recipes.

 

My little morning ritual 

I don’t even think about it anymore — drinking lemon water in the morning is just the very first thing I do when I get up. The kettle goes on, I add some prebiotic fibre (more on why in a sec), and I drink it while I empty the dishwasher and make my kids’ lunch.

It’s not a big production, it’s just a habit — one that’s made a huge difference in how I feel every day without any drama or complicated routines.

Prebiotic fibre feeds the good bacteria in your gut, helping balance your microbiome and support healthy digestion — which is super important when you’re trying to lose weight and feel your best and having it first thing in the morning is just a beautiful way to help me remember to take it.

Because it’s become a natural part of my morning, I don’t have to force myself or think twice about it. The power is in the repetition (it becomes a habit) — making it automatic means I don’t miss out on the benefits, and it sets the tone for healthier choices throughout the day.

Plus, doing it while I’m already moving around and getting things done (like the dishwasher and lunch prep) means it fits easily into my life — no extra time, no added stress.
