Want to rock your summer shorts? Start with these 5 things.

Sep 10, 2026

Summer has a way of sneaking up on us and also has a different vibe, a vibe I LOVE!

Summer has a completely different energy about it. The mornings are brighter, the days are warmer, we’re outside more, the food feels fresher and there’s this feeling that you just want to get out and live.

But you also want to feel good while you’re doing it.

You don’t want to pull on your favourite shorts and feel uncomfortable all day. You don’t want to be constantly tugging at a T-shirt because it feels too tight. You don’t want to avoid the swimmers, the photos or the day at the beach because you don’t feel good in your body.

You want to feel confident 🔥

You want to throw on your clothes and get on with your day. You want energy. You want to feel strong. You want to walk out the door without thinking about your stomach, your arms or whether your clothes are hiding enough.

And the good news? You don't need to spend the next few months starving yourself to get there.

Forget the detox. Forget living on salads. Forget eating as little as possible. And definitely forget promising yourself you'll be “good” again from Monday.

If I wanted to feel lighter, stronger, more energised and more confident heading into summer, these are the five things I'd change first.

No extremes. Just five changes that actually make a difference.

1. Fix breakfast first

This is where I start with almost every client.

Because if your breakfast leaves you hungry again at 10am, the rest of the day gets a whole lot harder.

You grab another coffee. Someone opens the biscuit tin. You pick at something while making lunch. By 3pm you're looking for sugar, and the couch.

Instead, build a breakfast around protein, fibre and healthy fatsA good breakfast should leave you feeling satisfied for hours!

The goal? Look up and realise it's lunchtime.

No second breakfast. No biscuit hunt. No counting down the minutes until you can eat again.

Get the first meal right and suddenly the rest of the day becomes a whole lot easier.

2. Stop eating all day

We've somehow made constant eating normal.

Breakfast. Morning tea. Lunch. Afternoon snack. Something when you get home. A few bites while cooking dinner. Dinner. Then something sweet afterwards.

Even if none of those things seem particularly big, your body is being asked to deal with food all day long.

I'd simplify it.

Three proper meals.

Make them big enough and balanced enough that you don't need to spend your entire day thinking about your next snack.

And this is important: I'm not telling you to ignore genuine hunger. I'm saying feed yourself properly in the first place.

When your meals contain enough protein, fibre and healthy fats, you'll usually notice the urge to constantly graze starts to settle down.

There's something incredibly freeing about eating breakfast, getting on with your morning, having lunch, getting on with your afternoon and then sitting down to dinner.

Food stops running the day.

3. Get the sugar out of the everyday stuff

When I say reduce sugar, most people immediately think:

“I don't eat much chocolate.”

But I'm often far more interested in what's happening before the chocolate ever comes out.

Breakfast cereal. Flavoured yoghurt. Muesli bars. Sugar in your coffee. Crackers and the list goes on!

Foods that can look perfectly reasonable, even “healthy" can still add a surprisingly large sugar load to your day.

That matters because starchy foods are broken down into sugar, raising your blood sugar and triggering insulin to help move that sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells.

You don't need to fear sugar and starch and you certainly don't need to eliminate every gram but you do want to become aware of how much is quietly sneaking into your everyday food.

Start reading labels. Choose plain over flavoured. Swap the cereal for a protein-rich breakfast. Build meals around whole foods rather than packets.

Don't try to make your diet perfect. Just clean up the things you're eating every single day.

That's where the biggest change happens.

4. Walk more. Lift something heavy.

You don't need to punish yourself with exercise because summer is coming.

You don't need to suddenly start doing an hour of cardio every day because you ate dessert on Saturday night either.

I'd keep movement ridiculously simple.

Walk more and build muscle.

Walk after meals when you can. Take the dog out. Park further away. Get outside in the morning. Put your shoes on and walk around the block instead of waiting until you have an hour free.

Then add some resistance training. Weights. Bodyweight exercises. Whatever works for you.

Building and maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we get older. Muscle supports strength, mobility and metabolic health, and it changes the way your body looks and feels.

And please don't underestimate walking because it doesn't leave you lying on the floor gasping for air. Consistency beats smashing yourself for two weeks and then quitting.

You don't need to become an athlete before summer.

You just need to move your body more than you are now.

5. Get organised before you get motivated

This might be the most important one. Because healthy eating is easy when you're motivated.

It's easy on Sunday morning when you've got time, the fridge is full and you've decided this is the week.

But your plan doesn't need to work on Sunday morning.

It needs to work on a rushed Tuesday night.

When you've worked all day. Someone needs to be at sport. You're tired. Nothing is defrosted. And takeaway suddenly sounds like the greatest idea anyone has ever had.

That's why I don't want you relying on motivation.

Get organised.

You don't need seven beautifully meal-prepped containers lined up in your fridge. You just need to make the better choice easier. Because the plan that gets results isn't the perfect plan.

It's the one you can still follow when life is actually happening.

Need help actually setting this up?

Inside Fuel Your Fire, I take you through how to set up your fridge and pantry, plan your food and  just as importantly work on the mindset and habits behind it all.

Because knowing what to eat is one thing.

Making it your normal is where everything changes.

Start now, not Monday

You have more time than you think.

A few consistent weeks of eating proper meals, getting more protein, reducing the everyday sugar, walking, getting stronger and being a little more organised can make a noticeable difference to how you feel.

Your energy can change.

Your hunger can change.

Your strength can change.

Your clothes can start fitting differently.

And perhaps most importantly, you can stop feeling like you're constantly starting again.

Don't wait for the perfect Monday. Don't wait until you're more motivated. Don't wait until summer is already here.

Pick one thing from this list and start today.

Then keep going.

Because you don't need another restart.

You need something you can actually stick to.
