5 reasons the weight might be sneaking on.

Sep 30, 2026

Sometimes weight doesn’t arrive with a dramatic change.

You haven’t suddenly started living on takeaway. You’re not sitting on the couch every night with a block of chocolate. You might actually feel like you’re eating pretty well.

But slowly, your pants get tighter. Your waist starts disappearing. You feel a little puffier, a little hungrier and a little less like yourself.

And yes age does play a part.

Your body at 40 or 50 is not exactly the same body you had in your 20s and 30s. Hormones change. Muscle mass can decline if we don’t actively maintain it. Sleep and stress can look completely different. Our routines change, and for many women, so does where the body tends to store fat.

These are real changes, and we need to accommodate for them.

That doesn’t mean weight gain is inevitable as you get older. It means some of the things you could get away with at 25 might not work quite so well at 45.

Your food matters. Your protein matters. Your movement matters. Your sleep matters. And the little things you do every day start to matter more. Often, it’s not one huge thing causing the weight to creep on.

It’s the little things happening every day that you don’t even realise are working against you.

Here are five places I’d look first.

1. Sugar is hiding where you don’t realise

This is a big one.

You might not be eating lollies, cakes and soft drink, but sugar and starches can still sneak into foods marketed as perfectly healthy.

Breakfast cereals. Granola. Flavoured yoghurt. Smoothies. Muesli bars. Bottled sauces. Some “healthy” breakfast options can leave you hungry again surprisingly quickly.

And that’s where the problem starts.

Breakfast at 7.30.

Coffee at 9.

Biscuit hunt at 10.

Something small before lunch.

Suddenly you’ve been eating all morning without ever really feeling satisfied.

Your first meal should make your morning easier, not have you hunting through the cupboard two hours later.

This is why breakfast is one of the first places I look with my clients.

I put together a free guide showing you 6 “healthy” breakfast foods that can have you biscuit hunting by 10am and what I’d swap them for instead.

2. You might not be eating enough, especially protein.

This sounds backwards when you’re trying to lose weight, but constantly trying to eat as little as possible can make healthy eating much harder to sustain.

A tiny breakfast. A light lunch. Picking at something for dinner.

Then wondering why you’re standing in the pantry at 8pm looking for something sweet.

Instead of focusing only on eating less, I want you to look at whether you’re eating enough of the right foods.

Proper protein. Vegetables. Fibre. Healthy fats. Whole foods that provide the vitamins and minerals your body needs. You should be able to eat, get on with your life and not spend the next few hours thinking about food.

Three proper meals can be a very different experience from trying to survive the day on coffee, tiny portions and willpower.

And when your diet is built around nutrient-rich whole foods rather than heavily processed foods, you’re also supporting your overall health rather than simply chasing a smaller number on the scales.

3. Your kitchen might be quietly sabotaging you

Turn a few packets around in your kitchen and actually read the ingredients. You might be surprised.

Sauces. Dressings. Marinades. Breakfast foods. Snack bars. Flavoured yoghurts. Drinks. “Healthy” packaged foods. Sugar, refined starches and highly processed ingredients can creep into foods you wouldn’t necessarily think twice about.

And individually, none of these foods is necessarily the whole problem.

It’s what happens when they’re showing up multiple times, every single day.

Your kitchen should make eating well easier.

That’s why one of the things I teach inside my FUEL YOUR FIRE đź”Ą program is how to set up your fridge, pantry and everyday meals so you don’t have to rely on motivation every time you walk into the kitchen.

Make the easy choice the choice you actually want to make.

4. You haven't been patient or consistent long enough

This one isn’t exciting, but it matters. We want results yesterday. So we eat well for four days, jump on the scales, don’t see what we hoped for and decide it’s not working.

Then we change the plan.. Low carb this week. Fasting next week. Calorie counting after that. A detox on Monday. Your body doesn’t need another dramatic Monday morning.

It needs you to do the simple things for long enough that they actually have a chance to work.

Eat low sugar meals.

Prioritise protein.

Drink your water.

Move your body.

Get some sleep.

Then do it again tomorrow.

You don't need to be perfect. You need to stop starting over. Consistency might not be sexy, but it is incredibly powerful.

5. You’re trying to do all of this alone

Knowing what to do and actually doing it every day are two very different things. Sometimes you need someone in your corner. Someone to remind you of how far you’ve come when you've had a rough week.

Someone to help you work out what isn't working instead of throwing the entire plan away. Someone to say, “Come on. We’re not giving up over one bad weekend.” Support creates accountability.

And accountability can be the difference between another plan you start and something you actually stick with long enough to see change.

You don't need someone judging every bite you eat.

You need someone who knows where you're going, has a clear plan to get you there and is cheering you on along the way.

Start with the first thing I change

If some of this sounds familiar, don't try to change everything tomorrow.

Start with breakfast. It’s simple, you eat it every day, and getting that first meal right can make the rest of your day feel a whole lot easier.

I’ve put together my 6 “healthy” breakfast foods that can have you biscuit hunting by 10am plus the simple swaps I’d make instead.

It’s the same place I start with all my clients.
